MED Works
Savings for Independence and Self Sufficiency:

MED Works has a special account for people who need to place excess resources into an approved account for the purpose of purchasing goods or services that will increase their employability and independence.

This is money that you have or will set aside to buy items or services needed to keep your employment or help improve your employability. If approved, this money does not count toward your MED Works eligibility.

Up to $20,000 can be approved to be set aside for independence and self-sufficiency. You must explain how you determined the amount you are requesting.

Your request will be considered based on your own personal situation. To save money in the Savings for Independence and Self-Sufficiency account, items or services, including special adaptive and assistive devices must meet some important criteria:

  • Your savings will be used to buy something that is necessary for you to keep or increase your employment.

  • You explain what will be purchased and give the time frame you have established for the purchase.

  • Your goal(s) must be reasonably achievable

  • The account must not be used for personal recreation.

  • The purpose for the account must be specified. Accounts for general savings will not be approved, nor will approval be given for items or services that Medicaid or another public program will provide.
