As one of seven centers at Indiana University's Institute on Disability and Community, we do research and provide training, assistance and information to individuals, families, professionals and communities. We work in partnership with adults who are aging with disabilities to promote their well-being, community-participation, self-determination and leadership.
The mission of the Center for Aging and Community is to provide leadeship that enables older persons to lead self-determined lives within their communities. The Center promotes practices that ensure access to opportunities for meaningful, productive, and healthy lifestyles.
The Center focuses on individuals who are either chronologically older or who may be experiencing functional changes typical of older persons. A convenient marker for elder status is 55 years of age. Because some individuals, such as those with Down Syndrome and Cerebral Palsy, may experience changes typical of the aging process as early as 25, no rigid limits are set. The Center also provides support for families, friends, service providers, organizations, and members of the community to improve the lives of older persons.
