Overview:

As one of seven centers at Indiana University's Institute on Disability and Community, the Early Childhood Center engages in research, training and technical assistance, and information dissemination activities designed to promote success school readiness among all young children.

Our Mission:

The mission of the Early Childhood Center is to advance the universal design of early education practices that promote school readiness for all children.

Our Focus:

The Center focuses on young children, birth through kindergarten-aged, and their families. Although the greater focus of the Institute on Disability and Community is individuals with disabilities, our Center focuses on all young children, including children with disabilities. We operate with the belief that creating universal programs of care, early education, and family support will best serve all young children and their families. Universally-designed programs that can differentiate their services to meet the individual needs of all children eliminates the need to maintain parallel service systems. Parallel service systems (e.g., special education preschool, Head Start preschool, Title 1 preschool, public/private preschool) are costly and can segregate and stigmatize children and their families.
