Duration: 1 - 2 hours
Above all, the syndrome we call dementia involves a loss of the "self". While a disease model of dementia calls our attention to important medical concerns that should be addressed, there is an alternative paradigm. This new paradigm embeds dementia in its social and cultural context and asks us to foreground what remains with the "patient", not what is lost. Participants will derive a deeper understanding of the roots of selfhood and learn some techniques for helping sustain a sense of the self in the lives of those for whom they care.
