Consumer-based State Disability Planning

Staff members at the Center for Planning and Policy Studies work with state agencies to identify the needs and perspectives of their consumer communities as they engage in statewide systems change activities. Some examples of recent Center activities include:

• Conducting Disability Action Workshops across Indiana to provide information on the upcoming city elections to people interested in disability issues;
• Conducting Citizen Policy Forums across Indiana to encourage citizen involvement in public policy.
• Conducting the Indiana Independent Living Survey, a statewide telephone survey of the extent to which people with disabilities are aware of independent living centers and their services to assist in future planning for the expansion of Independent Living Centers.
• Producing Voices: Indiana's Citizens with Developmental Disabilities Speak Out. This is the Report of Indiana's Consumer Satisfaction Survey conducted in 1990, a face-to-face interview of 400 individuals with disabilities across the state to determine their needs and progress towards independence, productivity, and integration into the community.
• Facilitating community planning with the Collaborative Work Lab, a computer-supported meeting environment for collaborative activities.
