Apps and Communication
Welcome to Apps, Communication and Visual Supports! Difficulty with communication is a key characteristic for individuals with autism. The individual’s ability to communicate will vary depending upon his or her intellectual and social development. Understanding the challenges between autism spectrum disorders and communication disorders can help a parent or professional figure out how to support an individual with ASD.
We also know that individuals with autism are able to process information easier when it is visual and spatial. Spoken language often times tend to abstract and transient. Therefore, visual supports can enhance an individual’s understanding. With visual supports, an individual may learn more quickly, reduce aggressive or self-injurious behavior, decrease their frustration and anxiety, learn to adjust to changes, complete tasks by themselves and gain independence.
