TEACCH 5-DAY CLASSROOM TRAINING PROGRAM

Training for Professionals who Work with Students with Autism

Workshop Overview - Sold Out; Wait List Available

Research consistently indicates that individuals with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) respond favorably to a structured environment. This workshop will provide participants with an understanding of how and why to implement structured teaching strategies, such as visual schedules, work systems and deliberately designed work materials.

Presented by TEACCH and the Indiana Resource Center for Autism,  Indiana Institute on Disability and Community at Indiana University-Bloomington.  In Collaboration with Forest Hills Special Education Cooperative.

Presenters Bios

Catherine Davies is an Educational Consultant at the Indiana Resource Center for Autism at the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community located at Indiana University, Bloomington. Catherine was a Clinical Psychologist in the UK specializing in developmental disabilities. She has over 20 years experience working with children and adults with developmental disabilities and was a special education teacher and school psychologist. Catherine obtained her Masters in Education and subsequently another in Psychology from the University of Wales going on to complete her professional training in Clinical Psychology with the British Psychological Society in 1998.    Lee M. Marcus, Ph.D. is Interim Director of Training with the TEACCH program. He is the former Clinical Director of the Chapel Hill TEACCH Center where he oversaw diagnostic, treatment, and consultation services for children, adolescents, and adults with autism. He is also a Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the UNC School of Medicine. Nationally and internationally, he leads seminars, workshops, and training sessions for professionals on various topics in autism. Dr. Marcus has written extensively on issues in assessment, program development and working with families.  Dr. Marcus and three TEACCH trained colleagues join Catherine Davies to present this 5-Day TEACCH Classsroom Training.

Since 1972, the TEACCH program at the University of North Carolina has coordinated the nation’s largest statewide education and treatment program for children and adults with autism and related communication handicaps. Current practices and pressures in the field of special education have increased the need for comprehensive training for working with students with autism and other severe behavior, learning, and communication difficulties. In recent years, TEACCH, part of the North Carolina Area Health Education Centers Program, has offered training programs to teachers and other professionals from around the world.

Attendance is required for all 5 days. Program runs from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. each day, please make your travel plans accordingly. Continental breakfast begins at 8:00 a.m.

The registration fee for this workshop is $1990.  Payment by credit card or purchase order only.  We are limited to 25 participants only.

Who Should Attend

This workshop is designed for teachers, psychologists, physicians, speech and language therapists, as well as researchers, clinicians, and others interested in educating students with autism and related developmental disabilities.

When all spaces are filled, applicants will be wait-listed and admission will be made on an “as available” or stand-by basis.  All registrations include a subscription to the Indiana Resource Center for Autism, the Reporter E-Newsletter.


Goals and Objectives

The pace of the program is intensive. The daily schedule combines hands-on classroom experience (including setting up the classroom for five students), lectures on topics related to working with students with autism, and group discussions of classroom activities:

  • A direct, supervised experience in a demonstration classroom setting developed collaboratively by training staff and participants.
  • Hands-on experience with students with autism of varying ages (within the elementary, middle and high school range) and functioning levels. 
  • An intense period of active learning.
  •  Presentations and demonstrations of working with students with autism, given by TEACCH program faculty and staff.

You Will Be Able To:

  • Describe the characteristics of autism;
  • Explain classroom assessment of children with autism;
  • Demonstrate structured teaching techniques;
  • Understand the importance of working cooperatively with families of children with autism;
  • Describe communication deficits, assess expressive communication and develop teaching techniques to address behaviors;
  • Use structured teaching techniques to promote students' independence as well as develop skills for leisure activities; and
  • Describe behavior management strategies and various levels of social interaction.

Certificates of Attendance and Graduate Credit Information


Certificates of Attendance for 37 instructional hours will be available at no charge and can be used for:

  • Professional Growth Points.
  • Indiana Professional Licensing Agency Continuing Education credits for occupational therapists and occupational therapist assistants licensing requirements.
  • Indiana Professional Licensing  Agency Category I Continuing Education credits for social workers, clinical social workers, marriage and family therapists, mental health counselors, addictions counselors and clinical addictions counselors for licensing requirements.

This workshop will also be offered for 3 hours of Graduate Credit (registration and course information will be available on the first day).
