2009 Indiana Disability Poll: Focus on Transportation

2009 Indiana Disability Poll: Focus on Transportation

The findings of the 2009 Disability Poll highlight use of transportation and the degree of satisfaction of 661 respondents from the disability community. The disability community sample includes people with disabilities (305), their family members or guardians (166), and advocates (190). Responses came from 77 of Indiana's 92 counties. The survey was available from November 2008 to June 2009. People responded via an Internet survey or on paper survey forms.

Transportation is Important for Work, Community Participation, and Independence

  • Lack of transportation options is a barrier for getting a job
  • Lack of transportation services at night and on weekends does not reflect contemporary lifestyles and needs
  • People are relying heavily on their families and friends for transportation, but prefer other options that make them more independent
  • Nearly 3 out of 4 people are concerned that budget cuts are affecting, or will affect, local transportation services
  • The less income a person earns, the more difficulties there are with transportation, especially for social, community, and daily life activities
  • There are more supports for getting people to work than for community participation

Moving Forward

  • Encourage use of volunteers, car pools, shuttles, other organizations
  • Provide more affordable options: taxi vouchers or discounted rides, free ride days, Recycle-to-Ride programs, short distance shuttles
  • Use more people with disabilities for input
  • Think beyond cars: improve sidewalks, trails, bike paths
  • Extend night and weekend hours
  • Expand and coordinate routes – city to city, cross county lines, regional for improved access to jobs, health care, community participation
  • Address timing issues – waiting/riding times, reliability, quicker turn-arounds, communication

The Annual Indiana Disability Poll

The annual Disability Poll is a joint project of the Center for Planning and Policy Studies, the Indiana Governor's Council for People with Disabilities, and Indiana Protection and Advocacy Services. Each year, a topic of interest to the disability community is selected, and then an online survey is developed.
