Meaningful Language, Purposeful Literacy, Ready Children

Overview

Language is everywhere!

We are bathed in oral and written language wherever we go. We know from years of research that language and literacy are one dynamic system, each informing the other. Everything a child does during the day, whether at home or in an early care and education setting, has the potential for communication interactions. Children who live in language-rich environments enter school more ready to engage in kindergarten learning opportunities that those who experience less linguistically stimulating environments. How can we create consistently rich language and literacy experiences for the children in our care? Join us, and discover ways to foster young children's learning in this critical school readiness area.

Participants will discover ways to provide children with deeper, quality prekindergarten language and literacy experiences that will give them a head start as they enter kindergarten. They will identify ways they can facilitate deeper understanding through the questions they ask, the feedback they provide, and the types of conversational techniques they use. They will discuss the merits of various techniques and identify those they will implement in their own practice.

She currently works for the Early Childhood Center at the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community where she is involved in research, writing and training that encompasses topics such as helping all children get ready for school, the universal design of language and literacy instruction, and the use of behavior as communication. She also supports preschool and kindergarten-aged children in the Monroe County Community School Corporation.

Workshops:  All topics presented by the Early Childhood Center can be designed to meet your in-service needs. Topics can be presented as full- or half-day workshops.

Technical Assistance: We have recently been using two nationally validated classroom assessment measures to examine the quality of children's time in preschool and the quality of teacher-child interactions that children experience--the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) and the Emerging Academic Snapshot. We have used these tools to evaluate both individual classrooms and overall early education programs followed by more individualized inservice training. Talk to us about how we might bring these new resources to your program to improve the quality of your early learning environments.
