Targeting Skills That Make a Difference in Kindergarten 

Overview

There are typically three major instructional routines in kindergarten classrooms: whole group time; learning centers; and individual work time. What do you need to know about the skills children need to successfully participate in these routines, and what changes need to happen to bridge your version of classroom routines with those typically found in kindergarten? Participants in this workshop will learn what Early Childhood Center research found regarding these quesions, and make plans for how to foster the specific skills children need as they enter kindergarten.

Details

Dr. Michael Conn-Powers is the presenter of this workshop. Dr. Conn-Powers has worked in the field of early intervention for over 30 years. He is currently a Research Associate at Indiana University, and Adjunct Assistant Professor in the School of Education, and Director of the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community's Early Childhood Center. Over the past 5 years, Dr. Conn-Powers has been extensively involved in research and product development in the areas of early intervention, service coordination, school readiness, and universal design. Dr. Conn-Powers has also been involved with designing and implementing Indiana's First Steps (Part C) child and family outcome evaluation system.

hops: All topics presented by the Early Childhood Center can be designed to meet your in-service needs. Topics can be presented as full- or half-day workshops.

Technical Assistance: We have recently been using two nationally validated classroom assessment measures to examine the quality of children's time in preschool and the quality of teacher-child interactions that children experience--the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) and the Emerging Academic Snapshot. We have used these tools to evaluate both individual classrooms and overall early education programs followed by more individualized inservice training.
