Promoting Voice

CAC believes strongly in helping people find their voice and giving a voice to “unheard” citizens -- those on the fringe of society and those whom, for a variety of reasons, do not or cannot speak up to have their voices heard.

The Storytelling project aims to collect and preserve life stories (oral histories) of ordinary citizens. The stories collected are as diverse as the people who tell them, and all commemorate and celebrate people from all walks of life -- those who give heft to the fabric of our community through their daily work, play, traditions and dreams.

The project is linked loosely with the Museum of the Person-Indiana, which provides a “virtual place” for all Indiana citizens to add their story or view those of others. Visit the Museum at http://www.bloomington.in.us/~mop-i/.

The Center has had the privilege to collect many Indiana stories for a variety of organizations with varying objectives. Our main role is facilitating story collection. We develop interview questions and provide technical assistance to those seeking to preserve life stories. We utilize a 10 x 10 story tent, video equipment, an interviewer and videographer in our preservation work. Upon completion of interviews, footage is either given to the requester, or we are contracted for editing and product development.
