Early Intervention

  • Autism: The Child Who Couldn’t Play. (1996). Length: 47 minutes. Produced and Distributed by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. This video provides an overview of the characteristics associated with and current research into autism spectrum disorders. The video describes the program offered by the Princeton Child Development Institute, highlights the importance of early intervention, and describes the use and role of applied behavior analysis. Recommended for use by professionals and families involved in the diagnosis and assessment of autism spectrum disorders, and those interested in early intervention.   • Behind the Glass Door: Hannah’s Story. (2000). Length: 52 minutes. Produced by Windborne Productions. This video follows one family’s struggle over a period of five years. It offers tremendous insight into the stress families and educators face as they tackle this mysterious disorder, while giving hope and inspiration. The video documents Hannah’s involvement and progress in an intensive one-on-one therapy program, and in a general education classroom. Recommended for family members and professionals interested in intensive early intervention and in involving children in the typical school environment.   • Creating a Classroom for Children with Autism and Other Disorders of Relating and Communicating. (2001). Length: 37 minutes. Produced by YAI/New York League for Early Learning. This video provides examples of the use of various components of Verbal Behavior and other strategies associated with Applied Behavior Analysis. Also discussed are the physical structure and other program components promoted through Division TEACCH. In addition, the video discusses strategies for building communication skills, creating a learning environment, and teaching appropriate social interactions. Recommended for professionals and families interested in implementing a Verbal Behavior program for young children with autism.   • Don’t Give Up: A Video on Autism. (1999). Length: 58 minutes. Produced by Minds Eye Pictures. This documentary chronicles the life of Adrian, a young child with autism who lives in Canada. The video focuses primarily on his therapy which is based on a combination of linguistic and psychoanalytic theories. Somewhat outdated.   • Floortime Training Series. (2005). Developed by Floortime Foundation and the Interdisciplinary Council on Developmental and Learning Disabilities. This three DVD and three booklet series features the work of Stanley Greenspan and Serena Wieder as they illustrate the principles of Floortime and the DIR Model for children with special needs. DVD 1 (45 minutes; case studies: 5 hours 40 minutes) illustrates the basics of relating and communicating. DVD 2 (45 minutes; case studies: 6 hours) teaches sensory regulation and social interaction. DVD 3 (45 minutes; case studies 5 hours 32 minutes) illustrates strategies associated with symbolic and logical thinking. Recommended for those interested in learning more about Floortime and DIR.   • Hygiene. (2005). Length: 25 minutes. Developed by Child First. This DVD provides a task analysis of washing hands, brushing teeth, blowing nose, and washing face. Activities are repeated to assist with rehearsal of skills. Recommended for use with children with special needs to help them in learning hygiene skills.   • Promising Practices: Effective Early Intervention in Autism. (1999). Length: 22 minutes. Produced by the Minnesota Autism Network. This video provides an overview of early intervention strategies for young children with autism spectrum disorders. Educational strategies highlighted include: teaching core skills, providing predictability and routine, adopting a functional approach to behavior, facilitating the transition to preschool classrooms, developing appropriate staffing ratios, and involving parents.   • Special Kids: Video Learning Program for Visual Learners. Length: Each video is approximately 40 minutes. Produced by Special Kids. This nine video series was developed by the parents of a child with autism, whose only real interaction with the world was certain TV shows and commercials. Realizing that videos might provide an avenue for learning new skills and information, these videos were developed to cover a range of topics. Recommended for visual learners ages 2-10.     • The Alphabet. (1996). This video introduces the alphabet, including both lower and upper case letters.
    • Animals, Birds, and Fish. (1996). This video introduces the learner to numerous animals, birds, and fish through pictures, and other means.
    • Body Parts and Grooming. (1996). This video introduces the learner to the various body parts. In addition, viewers learn about taking a bath or shower, washing hair, brushing teeth, and even trimming fingernails.
    • A Day At School. (1998). This video covers how to behave at school from getting on the bus, to sitting quietly, to raising your hand or waiting your turn. Written and picture descriptions of school items are introduced.
    • Getting Ready. (1996). This video illustrates everything that goes into dressing, including tying, zipping, and buttoning. Bathing, using the restroom, brushing your teeth, and combing your hair are also described.
    • Numbers and Quantities. (1996). This video discusses numbers, counting, the basics of addition, and the concept of quantities.
    • Shapes and Colors. (1996). In the video, viewers learn about shapes and colors, and what they mean in our life.
    • Spelling. (1996). This video teaches the alphabet, and spelling, reading and writing words. Views learn how to be creative and make sentences from words.
    • Things in a Day. (1996). This video teaches important things such as telling time, answering a phone, and buckling a seatbelt. Also illustrates funs things such as dancing, playing catch, and drawing pictures.
