  • Developing Friendships: Wonderful People to Get to Know. (2001). Length: 12 minutes. Produced by Kim Davis/Indiana Resource Center for Autism. Each of us has a strong need for companionship and relationship with others. Individuals with autism spectrum disorders share those feelings. They want friends and relationships but the social aspect of their life is one of their greatest challenges. In this video, individuals discuss the various social difficulties they experience, such as being bullied, missing subtle social cues, and following and maintaining conversations.   • Dolan Method: Teaching the Child with Autism to Swim. (1991). Length: 42 minutes. Developed by Bettie Spowal. The video illustrates children across the autism spectrum learning to swim using the Dolan Method.   • Embracing Play: Teaching Your Child with Autism. (2000). Length: 47 minutes. Developed by Hilary Baldi and Deanne Detmers of Behavioral Intervention Association. In this video, parents discuss the importance of play in reaching their child with autism. Professionals and parents demonstrate strategies for creating the structure necessary to foster a child’s play skills using “Object-Focused Play.” This strategy sets the foundation for communication and social development. Strongly recommended for family members or professionals working with young children across the autism spectrum. A great video for families of newly diagnosed young children.   • Incredible 5-Point Scale. (2005). Length: 22 minutes. Developed by Autism Asperger Publishing Company. This DVD features Kari Dunn Buron and Mitzi Curtis speaking about their 5 point scale used to assist students in understanding social interactions and in controlling emotional responses. Recommended as a practical tool to be used in either classroom or home situations.   • Joining In: A Program for Teaching Social Skills. (2003). Length: 92 minutes. Developed by Linda Murdock and Guru Shabad Khalsa. This two video set focuses on three categories of social skills: conversational, interpersonal, and school social skills. In the videos, typical peers serve as actors to model both appropriate and inappropriate social skills. In addition, a series of lesson plans are included in an instructor’s manual. Recommended to be used directly with individuals who are engaged in a social skills program. The videos model social skills that include using good manners, handling stress, respecting personal space, sharing friends, paying attention and many others.   • Manners for the Real World: Basic Social Skills. (2008). Length: 44 minutes. Produced by Coulter Video. This video demonstrates for people on the autism spectrum how to act during some of the most common interactions between people. Designed for students from upper elementary through senior high school. Covers topics of personal hygiene, conversations, introductions, telephone and internet use, table manners, behavior for ladies and gentlemen, manners in public, serving as a host, and being a guest. Recommended for those involved in teaching manners to students on the autism spectrum. This is an update of the 2004 version and includes optional English and Spanish subtitles.   • Relationship-Based Intervention. (2006). Length: 3 DVD series. Produced by Autism Services by Klaw. This three-part presentation by Rebecca Klaw is designed for anyone who works with young children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The information presented is an eclectic blending of Dr. Stanley Greenspan's work (Floortime), Dr. Richard Solomon's work (The PLAY Project), and Susan Sonders work (Giggletime). DVD 1 covers why building relationships is so important in working with young children with Autism Spectrum Disorders; DVD 2 discusses basic strategies for building relationships with young children with Autism Spectrum Disorders; and DVD 3 illustrates combining basic strategies to create effective and therapeutic social routines for young children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Recommended for professionals and family members teaching social skills to young children.   • Social Stories and Comic Strip Conversations: Unique Methods to Improve Social Understanding. (1998). Length: 93 minutes. Produced by Future Horizons, Incorporated. This video features Carol Gray discussing the Social Stories concept and how it can be an effective tool for children across the autism spectrum. Social Stories have helped to improve the behavior, social, functional and communication skills of children with autism spectrum disorders and related disabilities. A description of the social cognition difficulties of individuals with autism is included. Recommended for professionals or family members interested in using Social Stories. In the first video, Michelle Garcia Winner presents the ILAUGH framework which is a six point model of social cognition. In the second video, she demonstrates this framework while working with elementary and high school aged children in group and individual lessons.
