ADA-Indiana Webinar

The ADA National Network and the U.S. Access Board are offering a free webinar on the accessibility of a variety of communication elements and features such as fire alarm systems, signs, telephones, detectable warnings, and assistive listening systems.

Standards issued under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Architectural     Barriers Act (ABA) address accessibility to a variety of communication elements and features.Requirements address elements such as fire alarm systems, signs, telephones, detectable warnings, assistive listening systems, automatic teller machines, and two-way communication systems. This session will review the scoping and technical provisions for accessible communication elements and features in the ADA and ABA standards and highlight updates to the specifications.

Also, early registration for the Indianapolis ADA Symposium ends on April 30th. On May 1st, registration increases by $100. The Great Lakes ADA Center and the Great Plains ADA Center are hosting an ADA Symposium in Indianapolis, May 30th – June 1st. This three-day event will feature expert presenters on the 2010 ADA Standards such as the Access Board and Kim Paarlberg from the International Code Council.

Extended Deadline for Employment Specialist Training

The Indiana Institute will host a six-day, face-to-face Employment Specialist Training in Bloomington on May 15-17 and June 12-14. Job developers, employment specialists, and others involved in recruiting, training, hiring, inclusion and job placement for individuals with disabilities will benefit from this training, sponsored by the Indiana Supported Employment Training Team.

Training is divided into two parts (attendance at both parts, all six days, is required) and covers:

Person-centered planning,
Job development,
Worksite analysis
Assistive technology
Job supports
And more. 

Registration has been extended to May 7!

Two-Day Training on Social Security and Other Benefits in May

The registration deadline is nearing for Learning the Basics: Social Security and Other Federal and State Benefits, a workshop designed to help participants understand benefit programs and learn how to navigate them when supporting beneficiaries. Since many benefit programs also offer incentives for individuals going to work, attendees will also explore state and federal work incentive programs as well.

The training will be held (deadline for registrations is May 21):

8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Eastern Daylight Time)

Registration fee is $110.00 per person (there is no coast for VR personnel). Individuals and family members as well as VR counselors, service and transition coordinators, mental health professionals, employment specialists, and case managers are encouraged to attend. Note: This 2-day, informational training does not provide certification.

The Institute’s Center on Community Living and Careers develops and administers these two-day Social Security benefits trainings as well as its trainings for Benefits Information Network liaisons in collaboration with the Social Security Administration, the Indiana Medicaid Infrastructure Grant, and Vocational Rehabilitation Services.

TEACCH Five-Day Classroom Training Program

The Institute’s Indiana Resource Center for Autism, in collaboration with Forrest Hills Special Education Cooperative, will host a five-day workshop (June 18-21, 2012) focusing on providing intensive training that combines hands-on classroom experience, lectures, and topics related to working with students with autism. 

The daily schedule includes:

A direct, supervised experience in a demonstration classroom setting developed collaboratively by training staff and participants.

Hands-on experience with students with autism of varying ages (within the elementary, middle and high school range) and functioning levels.

An intense period of active learning. Presentations and demonstrations of working with     students with autism, given by TEACCH program faculty and staff.

Certificates of Attendance for 37 instructional hours will be available at no charge and can be used for:

Professional Growth Points

Indiana Professional Licensing Agency for occupational therapists and occupational therapist assistants licensing requirements.

TEACCH will also be offered for 3 hours of Graduate Credit. Registration fee is $1,990.00 per person. Registration is limited to 25 persons. Payment for registration fee is done online through Indiana University (IU)

Pratt to Present at LRP's National Institute

Cathy Pratt, Director of the Institute’s Indiana Resource Center for Autism, will present a session at the 33rd Annual LRP’s National Institute, to be held May 6-9, 2012 in San Antonio. 

Pratt’s presentation titled How to Reduce Dependence on One-to-One Aides for Students with Autism will provide attendees with proven strategies to select, schedule, and train one-to-one aides, with an emphasis on reducing students’ dependency in the LRE. Tips on assessing parent-led requests for personal aides and effectively communicating with them on this issue will also be addressed.

Survey on Accessible Transportation

The Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund (DREDF) is conducting a survey on what factors are most important to riders with disabilities when deciding which transit mode to use.

The confidential survey results will be part of a national study called Transit Cooperative Research Project B-40: Strategy Guide to Enable and Promote the Use of Fixed-Route Transit by People with Disabilities. The goal is to develop strategies to improve bus and train system for people with disabilities. DREDF’s research partners are TranSystems Corporation, The Cooperative, and KFH Group.
