ADA-Indiana Audio Conference

How does the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) apply to Segways®, golf cars, and all-terrain vehicles? Advances in technology have given rise to new power-driven devices that were not necessarily designed for people with disabilities, but are being used by some people with disabilities for mobility.

The term "other power-driven mobility devices" appears in the revised ADA regulations and refers to any mobility device powered by batteries, fuel, or other engines, whether or not they are designed primarily for use by individuals with mobility disabilities for the purpose of locomotion. Covered entities must consider whether or not they can make "reasonable modifications" in their policies and procedures to allow individuals who use these devices to enter their premises.

Join this session and learn the factors that go into determining whether or not it is “reasonable,” and what is happening nationally to address this issue. This Audio Conference is free and open to the public and will be held on Tuesday, August 21 (2:00-3:30 pm EASTERN) across 11 Indiana locations.

Click for more specific information about these site locations (if you can’t make it to one of the hosted locations, visit our website to find out more about other options, some are available at no cost!). For more information, contact Matt Norris at (812) 855-6508 or e-mail adainfo@indiana.edu. The Indiana ADA Audio Conference program is sponsored by ADA-Indiana, Great Lakes ADA Center, and the Indiana Governor’s Council for People with Disabilities.

The meeting will be held at Bloomington City Hall, 401 North Morton Street (McCloskey Conference Room, 1st floor). Parking is free and the meeting space is fully accessible. The goal of the Arts Alliance is to provide a forum for artists and art organizations to establish the global needs of the arts community, set priorities, and to generate advocacy to stimulate the implementation of solutions.

Participate in the 2012 National Center on Accessibility Golf Survey

A number of important events have occurred in recent years in the area of sports and people with disabilities such as the invention or improvement of assistive devices for use in golf,  the development of ADA guidelines for recreation facilities including golf facilities, and an increase in the number of organizations promoting golf for persons with disabilities and health issues.

While one might assume that facilitators to pursuing golf have increased and barriers may have decreased, there is a need to determine the level of participation in golf by persons with disabilities, and what helps or hinders one’s interest in pursuing the game.

The purpose of this survey is to look at what encourages or discourages a person with a disability and/or health condition to play golf. You do not need to play golf to complete this survey.

For questions about the survey, contact either Dr. Sherril York by e-mail at shyork@indiana.edu (812) 856-4422 or Jeffrey Chait by e-mail at jchait@indiana.edu (812) 964-0667. This survey is also available in alternative formats upon request.
