Four-Part Webinar Series on the ADA and Access to the Arts

The ADA National Network, the National Center on Accessibility, and other organizations are teaming up for a 4-part webinar series that will look at access to Arts and Recreation programs. The first session will be on May 22nd and will feature John Wodatch, former Disability Section Chief at the U.S. Department of Justice.

First Webinar in Series:  Program Access in Parks, Recreation and Tourism

Free Webinar
Wednesday, May 22nd
 2:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. EASTERN

It's free, but REGISTRATION is required to participate in this session.

How does the program access standard in Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act apply to parks, recreation and places of tourism? Practitioners often mistake the “program access” standard for only activities requiring advance registration, structured schedules and staffed by personnel or volunteers. However, “program access” really extends to the entire realm of opportunities, experiences and benefits.

Additionally, presenters John Wodatch, former Disability Section Chief at the Department of Justice and Ray Bloomer, Accessibility Specialist with the National Park Service, and Director of Education at the National Center on Accessibility will review what the provision for readily accessible and usable goods and services means for places of public accommodation under Title III of ADA.

Click to register. You will be offered the option to register for just this one, or any or all of the sessions in the webinar series.

Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS 2) Workshop

Only four slots left so get registered now! The Institute’s Indiana Resource Center for Autism will host a two-day workshop on June 24-25, 2013 at the Porter Services Center, 9150 East Rawles Avenue, Indianapolis, on the five modules of the ADOS-2. The presentation will include demonstrations of two of the modules, with participation by two school age students. There will be an opportunity to practice and discuss the scoring criteria. The clinical use of the ADOS-2 will also be discussed.

This workshop will feature Dr. Pam DiLavore, Assistant Director of the Chapel Hill TEACCH Center. DiLavore holds a doctorate in Special Education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has worked in the autism field since 1978 as a teacher, researcher, and TEACCH autism specialist. She participated in the development of the ADOS while working with Dr. Catherine Lord as the research coordinator on a longitudinal study of the early identification of autism.

DiLavore has conducted ADOS training in several states as well as participating on TEACCH training teams nationally and internationally. Her primary interests continue to be around diagnostic and clinical work with children who face behavioral and developmental challenges.

This workshop is designed for School Psychologists, Clinical Psychologists, and Speech Language Pathologists and related professionals interested in learning how to use the ADOS-2. (This program will not provide reliability training for those interested in using this instrument for research purposes.)

Registration fee is $380.00 per person and includes all required materials for the workshop such as scoring protocols. Also included is a DVD showing 2 administrations of the ADOS-2 (along with completed scoring Protocols) that attendees can view after the workshop to reinforce the skills learned. Participants may choose to bring their own ADOS-2 manual in order to make notes for their future use of the manual but additional manuals will not be provided at the training.

Click to register. Payment may be made by credit card or purchase order only. All registration payment questions should be directed to IU Conferences at 800-933-9330, Melissa at iuconfs@indiana.edu, or Ginger at gscott@indiana.edu.

Federal Agencies Seeking Transition Ideas

The Social Security Administration and the U.S. Departments of Labor, Education, and Health and Human Services set up a two-week online “suggestion box” beginning last week to obtain suggestions and input on ways to improve services and outcomes for transitioning youth.

Per the ePolicy Works online input home page, “Your input to this dialogue is extremely important because studies have shown that, compared to their peers without disabilities, students with disabilities are less likely to receive a regular high school diploma; twice as likely to drop out of school; and half as likely to enroll in and complete postsecondary education programs. Individuals, families, teachers, and disability service professionals are encouraged to register to review or comment on suggestions posted on the site or to leave new ideas. The ePolicy Works: Partners in Disability and Employment site will be open through Friday, May 27.

For more information about the online transition conversation, click on the link to last week’s Disability Scoop article.
