Selected Bibliography: Communication Literature Related to Autism Spectrum Disorders

Contributed by Beverly Vicker, CCC-SLP

No single book, article, video or DVD will provide complete assistance to the person interested in understanding the complexity of the communication disability experienced by various individuals with an autism spectrum disorder. This bibliography lists materials that can provide overview information and research about various communication related issues. It includes references that represent a range of theories, opinions, and options for intervention. Listing on the bibliography does not constitute endorsement of content by Indiana University, the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community nor the Indiana Resource Center for Autism.

Many of the materials listed below can be obtained from the Center for Disability Information (CeDIR) at the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community. The staff will also be happy to assist patrons in locating other materials.

  • To contact CeDIR, call 1-800-825-4733 (toll free in Indiana) or 1-812-855-9396 (voice/TTY).
  • Their website is located at www.iidc.indiana.edu/cedir
  • Only Indiana residents may check out materials either on site or by phone call and mail delivery.
  • Indiana residents are responsible for mailing materials back to the CeDIR library.

Readers are also encouraged to access the IRCA website for easy to read IRCA communication articles on topics such as echolalia, communicative function, social communication characteristics, and many others.
