Selected National Resources for Information on Autism Spectrum Disorders
Contributed by Marci Wheeler The following publications, national agencies and organizations address various issues surrounding autism spectrum disorders and other disabilities. Contact each agency or organization for specific information about cost, type of publications, services and resources, expertise of staff and other considerations. Dissemination of this list does not reflect official endorsement of any organization. Seeking information about autism spectrum disorders can be a time consuming and confusing process. It is hoped that by providing a list of frequently used resources that your information gathering journey will be made easier. Autism Asperger Publishing Company (AAPC)
Publishes and sells books and materials. Also sponsors conferences nationwide. The Autism File
The Autism File is a quarterly magazine focused on all aspects of autism spectrum disorders. However, there is a major focus on medically related issues and treatments. Current subscription is $32.99 for six issues. The Autism National Committee (AUTCOM)
Membership fee of $10 for individuals with autism, $30 regular membership. The Autism Society of America
Membership to the Autism Society of America, Inc., currently $30.00 for individuals and $40.00 for families includes a subscription to the Advocate Magazine. ASA is a national organization that engages in legislative and advocacy efforts and also disseminates information on behalf of individuals with autism spectrum disorders and holds a national conference each July. The AARI Newsletter provides information on current research related to individuals across the autism spectrum. The annual subscription for individuals is $18.00. The subscription fee outside the U.S. is $20.00. The Autism Research Institute (ARI) also maintains a web site and produces and distributes a variety of information packets, videos and audio tapes many related to biomedical treatment of autism spectrum disorders. Operates an extensive bookstore for materials related to autism spectrum disorders. The bookstore operates nationwide. Also operates limited number of programs for residents of North Carolina providing residential, vocational and recreational services. The Autism Spectrum Quarterly

This journal highlights articles and research that focus on practical strategies for teaching and working with individuals to improve a wide variety of skill deficits experienced by individuals with autism spectrum disorders. Carol Gray, the founder and director of the Center, presents across the country on topics related to social skills and understanding for persons on the autism spectrum. Individual subscription rate is $55.00 for quarterly publication. JPBI is the official journal of the Association for Positive Behavior Support. This journal focuses on research based information on positive behavior supports for home, school and community settings. Annual subscription is $22.00 for a quarterly newsletter for individuals in the U.S. MAAP Services, Inc. also provides information by responding to phone calls and emails and developing and selling a few of their own publications. MAAP offers an annual two day conference offering many unique opportunities for individuals with autism spectrum disorders to present and network with others. Their focus is on autism spectrum disorders in relation to a wide variety fields emphasizing biomedical treatments. DAN! has produced a manual Clinical Assessment Options for Children with Autism and Related Disorders: A Biomedical Approach that is available for $25.00. They also have a list of physicians who have attended a recent DAN! training event and who use a variety of biomedical approaches to treat autism spectrum disorders. M.I.N.D. Institute (Medical Investigation of Neurodevelopmental Disorders)
An interdisciplinary institute established to conduct research and provide clinical programs focused on those with neurodevelopmental disorders. A quarterly publication is available online that includes updates on the Institute’s advances in research, clinical care and education, as well as providing information on upcoming events. Organization for Autism Research (OAR)
OAR is an organization focused on funding applied research focused on autism spectrum disorders and various issues throughout the lifespan. A website offers extensive information about autism spectrum disorders and current research including “A Parent’s Guide to Research” a resource guide to help parents understand applied research and various research methods. A monthly e-newsletter The Oaracle, offers very useful information for families. Selected National Resources for Families (Across Disabilities) Developmental Delay Resources (DDR)
Sponsors conferences, quarterly newsletter, and small bookstore focused on treatments related to nutrition, immune functioning and environmental causes of developmental delays. Membership fee is $50.00 for families, and $25.00 for student or retiree. Membership includes a subscription to their quarterly newsletter New Developments. Exceptional Parent Magazine
Cost is $29.95 for a one year subscription for individuals if ordered online. This includes 12 issues and a free annual resource guide. The Resource Guide can be purchased separately. It is a valuable publication which lists national organizations, associations and products and services as well as certain state by state listings. The Beach Center works to enhance the lives of individuals with disabilities and their families. They assist families with identifying resources, by providing training and conducting research. They offer an e-newsletter; check the website for details. HEATH Resource Center:The National Clearinghouse on Postsecondary Education for Individuals with Disabilities
HEATH provides information on educational supports and post secondary schools including college and university campuses and vocational schools. Information is also available on adult education programs and other training programs after high school for individuals with disabilities. A quarterly e-newsletter is available. Small independent publisher/mail order agency, that provides excellent resources on diversity, inclusion, and change. The publishers also offer workshops around the world on inclusion, person centered planning and related topics. Contact them for a free copy of the yearly publication, Inclusion News. Mental Health Aspects of Developmental Disabilities (MH/DD)
This peer-reviewed journal focuses on mental health issues of diagnosis and treatment for people with developmental disabilities. The journal addresses research, clinical practice and community supports. Published four times a year a personal subscription is currently $84.00 in the United States. National Information Center for Children and Youth with Handicaps (NICHCY)
This is an information and referral center that provides a wealth of information on disabilities free of charge. NICHCY is funded by the U.S. Department of Education Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP). Information is also available in Spanish. Learning Disabilities Association of America
Membership to Learning Disabilities Association of America includes a subscription to the Newsbriefs newsletter published six times a year. Newsbriefs focuses on the broad spectrum of learning disabilities and on disabilities that overlap with learning disabilities. Also offers a very comprehensive website with current resource information listings by state. PACER Center, Inc.
A Minnesota and national parent center for families of children with disabilities. They provide workshops and a wide variety of newsletters, publications and materials, which are free or sold at cost. Special Ed Advocate Newsletter
The Wrights are legal advocates who provide workshops and materials to educate family members on how to become effective and positive advocates of behalf of their child with a disability.
