Paraprofessional Workshop: Join Diane Twachtman-Cullen, a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist specializing in autism spectrum disorders, for a one-day workshop, September 13, 2005 at Noblesville High School, on the art and science of paraprofessional support. Paraprofessionals, instructional assistants, or one-on-one aids attending this workshop will learn how to:

Identify the differences between what is meant by the art and what is meant by the science of paraprofessional support;

Identify the deficits in autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and describe the implications they have for educational programming;

Describe the similarities and differences regarding the roles, responsibilities, and duties of teachers and paraprofessionals;

List the different types of supports that students with ASD require; and

Identify pitfalls and learn to troubleshoot problem situations.

Registration fee is $30.00 per person and includes the manual How to be a Para Pro: A Comprehensive Training Manual for Paraprofessionals. Positive Behavior Supports Seminars: The Arc of Indiana and the Indiana Association of Behavior Consultants (IN-ABC) invites you to attend a one-day seminar, offered in four Indiana locations, on positive behavior supports. Kelly Hartman, President/CEO, insights consulting, inc, will be the featured presenter and will focus on the what, why, and how's of behavioral challenges, the process of functional behavioral assessment, and what to expect from a behavior support plan and behavioral consultants.

Comings and Goings

Puppetry and People with Special Needs: Terri Klingelhoefer, Database Coordinator, with the Indiana Resource Center for Autism, will present a workshop entitled Puppetry and People with Special Needs at the Puppeteers of America biennial conference, Puppetfest 2005, in St. Paul Minnesota on July 24-30, 2005.

Klingelhoefer's workshop session will focus on current information about puppetry with, and by, people with disabilities using a research-based framework for best practice. A discussion of the inclusion of persons with special needs in puppet show audiences, performances, and instruction will also be addressed.
