ADA-Indiana Logo and LinkJune ADA-Indiana Audio Conference: Accommodating Employees with Psychiatric Disabilities in the Workplace will be the focus of ADA-Indiana’s June 17th audio conference. Psychiatric conditions are the leading charge category for complaints filed with the EEOC. Data gathered by the National Institute of Mental Health indicates that more than one in five American adults experiences some diagnosable mental disorder in a given year. Employers are often concerned that accommodating individuals with psychiatric disabilities is more difficult and costly than accommodating those with physical disabilities. This session will address the realities of accommodating individuals with disabilities in the workplace and offer practical solutions for employers.

Employers, state and local government employers, human resource professionals, people with disabilities, and other interested community members should plan to attend. No pre-registration is required. CRCC continuing education credits will be available. The session is free at the locations sponsored by ADA-Indiana.

Bloomington (2:00 - 3:30 p.m. EDT)
Indiana Institute on Disability and Community, Building L
2853 East Tenth Street

Indianapolis (2:00 - 3:30 p.m. EDT)

Indiana Governor's Planning Council Logo and LinkPartners in Policymaking Academy: Are you a parent of a child with a disability or a person with a disability? Would you like to see a barrier-free society where everyone is a valued member of their community? Are you interested in promoting change within your community? Within the state? If you answered YES! to these questions, you might be interested in becoming one of a growing number of over 500 people who are graduates of the Indiana Partners in Policymaking Academy.

Partners is a leadership-training program that provides eight weekends of training at no cost to participants, from October through May from noon on Friday through 4 p.m. on Saturday. A variety of national and state experts teach advocacy skills and best practice. Topics include the history of the disability rights movement, Indiana resources, community inclusion, legislation and lobbying, special education, social services, employment, community organizing, and more.

Partners is about systems change creating, working towards, and achieving a vision of shared values about people with disabilities. It is based on the belief that the most effective and enduring public policy decisions are made by the people who need and use services in partnership with policy makers. It is about becoming confident in yourself, competent in the knowledge and information you will receive, and comfortable in sharing the life experiences and expertise you bring to the program.

The program is open to a limited number of people. If selected, hotel, travel, child care and other related expenses will be covered. The application deadline has been extended to Monday, July 7, 2008. For more information, contact Partners in Policymaking, Governor's Council for People with Disabilities at (317) 232-7771 or (866) 234-1635 (voice mail).
