Disaster Relief
Disaster Relief Services for Persons with Disabilities: The Arc of Indiana has designated funds to provide disaster relief assistance to people with disabilities living in areas of the state severely affected by 2008 floods and recent tornadoes. The Arc will supply a $100 debit card to provide for immediate needs.
To apply for assistance, individuals should contact the local chapter of The Arc in their county, or a local agency providing services to people with disabilities. Application may also be made through an IPMG Case Manager, Area Agency on Aging, or a district office of the Bureau of Developmental Disabilities Services. The agency will need to submit the completed certification form on behalf of the recipient.
The certification form is available at http://wwwarcind.org. Click on "Disaster Relief Assistance" at the bottom of the web page. The criteria for Disaster Relief is as follows:
An agency must submit a completed certification form on behalf of the recipient confirming that the person:
· Is disabled;
· Is a recipient of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Medicaid Disability;
· Lives in a county declared a disaster area;
· Has been severely impacted by the disaster;
· Will use disaster relief funds for financial assistance as a result of loss from
the disaster; and
· The funds will supplement, not supplant, other sources of revenue used
to pay the person’s monthly bills.
Funding for Disaster Relief Assistance comes from resources remaining in our Winter Heating Assistance Program. The Winter Heating Assistance Program will resume at the end of the year.

Emergency Planning and Disaster Publication
Free Downloadable Emergency Planning and Disaster Publication for People with Disabilities: I am Citizen Prepared is a publication for people with disabilities and the people who support them. Given the current flooding and severe weather events in Indiana, emergency preparedness is a topic that is on the minds of many Hoosiers and those in neighboring states. There is much written about the subject, but not in a format that is accessible to people with intellectual/developmental disabilities.
I Am Citizen Prepared, written by Maribeth Mooney, Research Associate, with the Indiana Institute’s Center on Aging and Community, is a free downloadable publication, designed to provide information that does not focus on the scary aspect of disasters and emergencies. It offers the reader suggestions on how to prepare oneself in the event that an emergency does arise. The reader is encouraged to think of emergency preparedness as a project rather than a reaction to an unexpected and frightening event. I am Citizen Prepared is 49 pages and opens with Adobe Acrobat. Employment Specialist Training (EST): The Indiana Supported Employment Training Team (ISETT) will present its third, in a series of four, intensive training sessions designed to provide basic skills to service providers (August 5-7 and September 9-11, 2008 at Easterseals Crossroads, Indianapolis) who have worked as employment specialists for less than one year. Attendees learn best practices in job and career development, employment support planning, ecological analysis, follow-along, and emerging industry trends.
EST is a six-day training split into two sessions held one month apart. An exit test is required for participants seeking certification. Individuals who attend all days of both sessions and successfully complete the exit test receive a competency-based certificate from Indiana University. CEUs and CRUs are available. To date, the EST training team has trained and certified over 2,500 employment specialists in the state of Indiana. Past participants have included job coaches, teachers, job developers, parents, mental health professionals, vocational coordinators, state agency and Work One staff.
