
About the Indiana Disability and Health Project
The Indiana State Department of Health contracted with the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community to build a foundation of knowledge and stakeholder participation that could lead to improvements in health for people with disabilities.
Past Events and Activities:
- In 2018, the Disability and Health Project provided two training workshops in Evansville and Indianapolis. The workshops, Accessible Health for All, focused on physical accessibility and communication.
- In 2018, the Disability and Health Work Group met three times at the offices of the Indiana Governor's Council for People with Disabilities.
- In May, the Indiana Cancer Consortium provided an overview of their work with various groups and organizations in the state and gave a preview of the Indiana Cancer Control Plan.
- In August, the Cardiovascular Health and Diabetes Section of Indiana State Department of Health provided the group with an update on state initiatives to address heart disease, stroke, and diabetes in the state.
- In November, the Work Group will hear from the Indiana Rural Health Association about issues important to their organization.
- In May, the Indiana Cancer Consortium provided an overview of their work with various groups and organizations in the state and gave a preview of the Indiana Cancer Control Plan.
- During 2017, the Disability and Health Project collaborated with the IUPUI Fairbanks
School of Public Health, Center for Public Health Practice, to provide two
webinar trainings around disability in their series on Health Equity in their monthly Insights and Innovations
webinar. Both webinars are available in the Insights and Innovations webinar archive.
- In July, Dr. Adriane
Griffen talked about
Including
People with Disabilities: Public Health Workforce Competencies.
- In August,
Lewis Kraus from the Center on Disability at the Public Health Institute,
provided some insights on how health planners could get local data on the
disability population using the American Community Survey.
- The Disability and Health Project supported the 2017 Advocates for Livable Communities Summit: Healthy Communities with
a keynote from Dr. Belinda Reininger the University of Texas, School of Public
Health. Dr. Reininger was on the community team that received the 2014 Culture
of Health Prize from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
- The Disability and Health Project supported the 2016 Pathways to Health: Indiana Summit on Disability and Health. This event
featured Dr. Adriane Griffen, Association of University Centers on Disabilities
and Dr. Beth Marks from the University of Illinois at Chicago, Rehabilitation
Research and Training Center on Developmental Disabilities and Health. The
summit materials are available.
