Building Leadership Series - Part II
Supported by Indiana Disability Rights and the Indiana Governor’s Council for People with Disabilities, a second series of workshops were offered to 20 adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities from around the state. The participants were enrolled to attend Building Leadership Series 2, made up of three two-day workshops held March 12-13, April 23-24, and May 21-22, 2014. The new topics were developed based on the most popular requests from past participants.
The workshops included:
- Relationships, Romance and Intimacy: How do I get friends and find love?
Today, people with intellectual/developmental disabilities are exercising their right to be in a loving relationship more freely than in the past. They are falling in love. Some are getting married and some are having children. This workshop focuses on the many different relationships we all experience, how to expand networks of relationships, dating, intimacy, and sexual relationships.
- Community Membership/Civic Engagement: How do I get involved with my community?
Participating and engaging more fully in your community, steps and strategies to get connected with activities, clubs, organizations and other people as well as developing and nurturing relationships is one focus of this workshop. Additionally focus on citizenship and leadership opportunities as well as roles will be discussed.
- Healthy Living/Healthy Aging: How do I get and stay healthy, how do I partner with my doctors and health care providers?
This workshop focuses on how to keep ourselves healthy, diet, exercise, rest and leisure as well as understanding the aging process. It also focuses on how to partner with medical professionals, and how to keep dreaming, speaking up and making plans as we age.
As in the first workshop series, all topics had an accompanying workbook and included interactive activities. There is more information on the original Building Leadership Series (BLS) here. For more information on either BLS or BLS 2, please contact Jennie Todd.
