Trying New Foods

Trying New Foods

Description of the video:

0:01
hello I'm Amy Gaffney I'm an educational
0:04
consultant in the speech language
0:06
pathologist with the Indiana Resource
0:08
Center for Autism
0:09
we know that autistic children often
0:11
have difficulty trying new foods because
0:14
of texture taste or smell
0:16
understanding strategies to help your
0:18
child try new foods can make this
0:21
process easier for you and your child
0:24
first of all we want to try to make meal
0:26
times as calm as possible it takes a lot
0:30
of patience on the part of the parents
0:31
to wait for your child to try a new food
0:35
they may need to try it many many times
0:38
or have many many opportunities before
0:40
they even take that first lick or that
0:43
first bite but eventually they will be
0:45
able to decide if they really like the
0:47
food or they don't
0:49
some tips that I want to share with you
0:51
on trying these new foods are things
0:54
like trying a food chart where you can
0:56
put a sticker on every time that you
0:58
take a bite of something new or try to
1:02
have it make it a family affair and eat
1:04
the rainbow so each day your child can
1:07
choose a food from a certain color and
1:10
have everyone in the family try that new
1:13
red food or that new green food
1:16
have your child try just a little bit of
1:19
something such as one p or even a half a
1:25
p instead of the entire pea pod or maybe
1:28
just one little small piece of the
1:30
broccoli to start with and then the next
1:32
day you might have two little pieces of
1:34
broccoli you can also have them choose
1:37
which silverware they want to use so do
1:39
you want the yellow spoon or the Blue
1:42
Spoon and then I'm gonna put a fourth of
1:44
a teaspoon of applesauce on it just to
1:47
get started and just to try it just to
1:49
get it on your lips a little bit and see
1:51
if it tastes good
1:53
if your child likes apples it's a good
1:56
way to start trying new forms of an
1:59
apple such as maybe a dried apple or
2:02
apple sauce or something else that has
2:04
an apple flavor to it
2:07
another idea is to read some books or
2:10
watch some videos about favorite
2:12
characters trying new food new foods we
2:15
have linked on our website some books
2:18
that are good and also some videos such
2:21
as Daniel Tiger or Sesame Street and
2:24
having the characters trying new foods
2:26
to eat
2:27
you may want to try to pair a new food
2:29
with a food that they already like so if
2:32
they like to dip their vegetables in
2:34
ranch dressing try maybe introducing a
2:37
new vegetable to dip with that ranch
2:39
dressing so if they like orange carrots
2:42
maybe we'll try a thin piece of an
2:45
orange pepper to start with have your
2:48
child help you prepare the food we're
2:50
all more likely to try something if
2:52
we've been involved in cutting it up or
2:55
mixing it together or and making it in
2:57
some way
2:58
we want to be good role models for our
3:01
children so when we try to eat a food we
3:03
want to describe what it tastes like mmm
3:06
that's crunchy oh listen to that sound
3:10
do you want to try that sound you want
3:13
to try to make that crunchy sound with
3:14
that chip or with that carrot stick
3:17
we can also try to use fun plates and
3:20
silverware and straws when we try to
3:22
have something to drink so if your child
3:24
is a big Disney fan I found these cute
3:27
little Mickey Mouse plates where I can
3:29
put dips or little bits of things in the
3:32
ears and then I've got a bigger space
3:33
for that food that I really know the
3:35
child likes so they see more of their
3:37
favorites
3:38
sometimes we can hide stuff like if
3:41
you're making a spaghetti sauce or
3:43
something you can add extra vegetables
3:44
into that sauce that's a good way to get
3:46
things incorporated into your child's
3:48
diet
3:49
um and then if you want to try a new
3:51
drink or something maybe there's a new
3:52
flavor uh you can use that special straw
3:55
it's our special flavors dropper Mickey
3:58
to see if Mickey likes the drink so
4:01
we're gonna try it and see
4:04
we want to try introducing new foods at
4:06
snack time so if our child is always
4:09
wanting the same snacks we can use this
4:11
as a choice board I've got little and
4:14
this is just from the dollar store I've
4:15
got little containers full of um these
4:17
are peanut butter and crackers I've got
4:19
some fruit loops and I've got the
4:21
package here of the fruit snacks so I
4:24
can say oh what would you like for snack
4:26
and if they choose the fruit snacks
4:28
because that's their favorite then
4:30
that's done for the day so now we have
4:33
two other options and if this um if the
4:35
peanut butter and crackers are new that
4:37
we're trying then maybe my guess is they
4:40
might want to say oh I want to get a few
4:42
of these Fruit Loops so we'll give them
4:45
just a couple of Froot Loops and now we
4:48
get another choice we can have more for
4:50
our snack you want to try let's try a
4:52
one peanut butter and cracker or a half
4:55
a peanut butter and cracker and then we
4:58
can mix some with the Fruit Loops
5:01
sometimes kids like to mix things
5:03
together they think that part of it is
5:05
fun but then they're more apt to try to
5:07
eat what again what they've mixed up
5:09
together
5:12
if you're trying
5:14
um maybe a new vegetable or fruit you
5:16
might want to introduce two or three
5:17
types of the same kind of food so maybe
5:20
have out two or three types of fruits or
5:22
two or three types of vegetables for
5:24
your child to pick one and choose part
5:27
of it is just getting them used to
5:29
having these different types of food in
5:31
front of them on their plate getting
5:33
them used to tolerating it and
5:35
experiencing it sometimes before they
5:37
ever take that first bite
5:39
we know that children are more likely to
5:42
have a varied and balanced diet later in
5:44
life if they're introduced to a variety
5:46
of foods and tastes and textures when
5:49
they're in their Early Childhood years
5:50
so it's worth your while to start to try
5:54
and think about what are some good times
5:56
during your day that you can start
5:58
introducing a few more new foods to your
6:01
child
6:02
best wishes and I hope some of these
6:04
tips have helped
