Discovery is the foundation of employment and career planning in the state of Indiana. It's a process and journey, supported by Indiana Vocational Rehabilitation, that helps job seekers identify the types of environments they might like to work in, the tasks they find enjoyable, and the work that gives them satisfaction.
During Discovery, job seekers work with their employment service providers on a variety of activities and services, like visiting different companies to observe what employees there do, exploring careers online, or participating in interest inventories and assessments. Armed with new insights about themselves, job seekers are more likely to be matched with an employer and career they like.
The Center on Community Living and Careers offers two types of Discovery training for Indiana employment service professionals.
Discovery: Vocational Themes and Informational Interviewing
This condensed and targeted training introduces employment services professionals to the fine art of both vocational themes and information interviewing, key components of the Discovery process. If you're looking for a “take and go” format, this training fits the bill!
During training, you will focus upon development and caseload application, which will allow you to immediately apply new knowlege and skills when you return to your agency.
Participants will be introduced to:
- How interests develop into vocational themes
- The role that skills, conditions, and personality play in developing appropriate themes
- Construction of broad vocational themes
- Scripting for informational interviews
- The purpose and power of informational interviews in the Discovery process
