Family Guided Routines Based Intervention (FGRBI)
Families digest information in different ways, so below are some resources to help you talk with families about this way of providing services.
Description of the video:Indiana First Steps is starting something newThis new approach is calledFamily Guided Routines-Based Intervention (FGRBI)
The termFamily Guided means that you, the family, makes the decisions. You know your child better than anyone else.
The term Routines-Basedmeans that teaching children works best when it happens during the normal things that happen every day, like mealtime, dressing time, or outdoor play.
FGRBI approach to Early Intervention
Focuses on what is important to you
•Letsyou lead and providers “coach” by offering information and suggestions
•Helps you to work on new skills with your child during everyday routines
What does a home visit with FGRBI look like?
You may be wondering...
Using everyday routines is more than coming to your home to work with your child.
Children learn best with familiar people while they are doing meaningful, everyday things like:
•Eating a snack
Instead of bringing special toys and materials to your home, you and the provider will teach your child using your family’s objects and toys.
You will choose routines and activities you believe are best to teach your child with your provider’s support.
Your role as the family
•Is to help your child grow and develop.
•You know your child and your routines better than anyone else, but the provider is there to support you.
You will support your child To learn while you do what you always do with your family during everyday routines and ineverydayplaces.
Your FirstStepsProvider’s roleis to help you teach your childAs a coach, your provider will:•Listen to your concerns
•Offer suggestions about ways to help your child learn
To give your child regular practice
Your provider will help you choose routines and activities that are:
•Are comfortable for you and your family
By working together,
•Your child will have lots of practice to learn throughout the day, every day, not just during therapy sessions.
•Your child’s skills will develop, and your comfort and confidence in supporting your child’s development will grow.

Dialogue: 0,0:00:09.75,0:00:10.62,Default,,0,0,0,,I've been good!
Dialogue: 0,0:00:10.62,0:00:13.39,Default,,0,0,0,,When I first arrived at Evelyn's home
Dialogue: 0,0:00:13.39,0:00:15.99,Default,,0,0,0,,I just asked the family how things have been going because
Dialogue: 0,0:00:15.99,0:00:18.36,Default,,0,0,0,,they're a busy family with multiple jobs
Dialogue: 0,0:00:18.36,0:00:19.70,Default,,0,0,0,,going back to school
Dialogue: 0,0:00:19.70,0:00:22.17,Default,,0,0,0,,and its always nice to touch base and get a feeilng for
Dialogue: 0,0:00:22.17,0:00:24.44,Default,,0,0,0,,how they're doing as a family.
Dialogue: 0,0:00:24.44,0:00:26.74,Default,,0,0,0,,I like that it's a home visit, they
Dialogue: 0,0:00:26.74,0:00:28.57,Default,,0,0,0,,work a lot well with our schedule
Dialogue: 0,0:00:28.57,0:00:30.88,Default,,0,0,0,,because, like, we work late nights
Dialogue: 0,0:00:30.88,0:00:33.18,Default,,0,0,0,,we're up until like four and six o'clock in the morning.
Dialogue: 0,0:00:33.18,0:00:34.71,Default,,0,0,0,,Yeah, he works overnight
Dialogue: 0,0:00:34.71,0:00:36.18,Default,,0,0,0,,I work until four in the morning, so
Dialogue: 0,0:00:36.18,0:00:38.55,Default,,0,0,0,,yes. So it did help a lot that they
Dialogue: 0,0:00:38.55,0:00:41.79,Default,,0,0,0,,come to us. They ask us, like, is this okay
Dialogue: 0,0:00:41.79,0:00:43.49,Default,,0,0,0,,a time to come and stuff like that.
Dialogue: 0,0:00:43.49,0:00:45.46,Default,,0,0,0,,I was able to observe the bubble activity
Dialogue: 0,0:00:45.46,0:00:46.93,Default,,0,0,0,,and how that had been going for them
Dialogue: 0,0:00:46.93,0:00:48.73,Default,,0,0,0,,and they seemed really excited to show me.
Dialogue: 0,0:00:48.73,0:00:50.70,Default,,0,0,0,,I taught her how to do like 'pop' 'pop.'
Dialogue: 0,0:00:50.70,0:00:51.53,Default,,0,0,0,,Oh good!
Dialogue: 0,0:00:51.53,0:00:53.37,Default,,0,0,0,,Will she... will she say pop?
Dialogue: 0,0:00:53.37,0:00:54.77,Default,,0,0,0,,Yeah she's like 'pop.'
Dialogue: 0,0:00:54.77,0:00:57.30,Default,,0,0,0,,Oh good! Can I see that? Can we see how its going?
Dialogue: 0,0:00:57.30,0:00:59.30,Default,,0,0,0,,Yay! Vamanos!
Dialogue: 0,0:00:59.57,0:01:02.17,Default,,0,0,0,,They were excited to share with me that she
Dialogue: 0,0:01:02.17,0:01:04.81,Default,,0,0,0,,was requesting the bubbles from them by
Dialogue: 0,0:01:04.81,0:01:06.81,Default,,0,0,0,,'buh' 'buh' 'buh' the word for bubbles.
Dialogue: 0,0:01:06.81,0:01:09.18,Default,,0,0,0,,So we talked a little bit about how
Dialogue: 0,0:01:09.18,0:01:12.08,Default,,0,0,0,,they might be able to get her to ask them for
Dialogue: 0,0:01:12.08,0:01:13.92,Default,,0,0,0,,more bubbles, and open the bubbles,
Dialogue: 0,0:01:13.92,0:01:16.15,Default,,0,0,0,,and then blow more bubbles for Evelyn.
Dialogue: 0,0:01:16.76,0:01:17.92,Default,,0,0,0,,She just loves them.
Dialogue: 0,0:01:26.53,0:01:28.33,Default,,0,0,0,,I love how you're modeling that word for her.
Dialogue: 0,0:01:29.17,0:01:30.64,Default,,0,0,0,,Jesus held the bubbles
Dialogue: 0,0:01:30.64,0:01:34.21,Default,,0,0,0,,and he would wait for Evelyn to try and say bubbles
Dialogue: 0,0:01:34.21,0:01:35.74,Default,,0,0,0,,and both he and mom would say
Dialogue: 0,0:01:35.74,0:01:37.34,Default,,0,0,0,,'Bubbles! Bubbles! More bubbles!'
Dialogue: 0,0:01:37.68,0:01:39.64,Default,,0,0,0,,And we talked about how
Dialogue: 0,0:01:39.64,0:01:41.75,Default,,0,0,0,,if she even just looked at them or
Dialogue: 0,0:01:41.75,0:01:44.42,Default,,0,0,0,,if she tried to make a sound that
Dialogue: 0,0:01:44.42,0:01:47.22,Default,,0,0,0,,that would be a good indication that she was ready for more bubbles.
Dialogue: 0,0:01:47.89,0:01:50.36,Default,,0,0,0,,And I - I like how you just keep modeling them more.
Dialogue: 0,0:01:51.49,0:01:52.52,Default,,0,0,0,,You want more bubbles?
Dialogue: 0,0:01:53.59,0:01:54.59,Default,,0,0,0,,A bubble.
Dialogue: 0,0:02:00.93,0:02:02.83,Default,,0,0,0,,Look! Pop!
Dialogue: 0,0:02:02.83,0:02:04.97,Default,,0,0,0,,So then dad would blow her some bubbles
Dialogue: 0,0:02:04.97,0:02:07.84,Default,,0,0,0,,and both mom and dad got very excited about modeling the word
Dialogue: 0,0:02:07.84,0:02:09.94,Default,,0,0,0,,and popping the bubbles. 'Pop pop pop pop!'
Dialogue: 0,0:02:09.94,0:02:12.51,Default,,0,0,0,,And they were very excited because in that activity
Dialogue: 0,0:02:12.51,0:02:15.71,Default,,0,0,0,,they were able to hear Evelyn say 'buh buh' for bubbles
Dialogue: 0,0:02:15.71,0:02:17.52,Default,,0,0,0,,and 'pop' for popping the bubbles.
Dialogue: 0,0:02:17.52,0:02:19.05,Default,,0,0,0,,So that was really exciting for them.
Dialogue: 0,0:02:19.05,0:02:19.58,Default,,0,0,0,,What do you think?
Dialogue: 0,0:02:19.58,0:02:21.45,Default,,0,0,0,,How do you think we could get her to indicate
Dialogue: 0,0:02:21.45,0:02:22.45,Default,,0,0,0,,she wants more bubbles?
Dialogue: 0,0:02:22.45,0:02:22.99,Default,,0,0,0,,Or - just more?
Dialogue: 0,0:02:22.99,0:02:24.69,Default,,0,0,0,,I feel like the more -
Dialogue: 0,0:02:25.22,0:02:27.76,Default,,0,0,0,,- saying it more to her. You know?
Dialogue: 0,0:02:28.33,0:02:29.39,Default,,0,0,0,,Yeah! Good!
Dialogue: 0,0:02:29.39,0:02:30.56,Default,,0,0,0,,I don't know. More bubbles?
Dialogue: 0,0:02:30.56,0:02:33.80,Default,,0,0,0,,So I don't think she'd say it, you know, but doesn't hurt to try.
Dialogue: 0,0:02:33.80,0:02:36.67,Default,,0,0,0,,I like getting... is it getting coached? I like getting coached
Dialogue: 0,0:02:36.67,0:02:38.40,Default,,0,0,0,,because she's teaching me all these other
Dialogue: 0,0:02:38.40,0:02:41.14,Default,,0,0,0,,stuff that I wouldn't have thought about teaching Evelyn
Dialogue: 0,0:02:41.14,0:02:42.74,Default,,0,0,0,,and I'm learning a lot.
Dialogue: 0,0:02:43.04,0:02:44.98,Default,,0,0,0,,She gives me new ideas for sure.
Dialogue: 0,0:02:44.98,0:02:46.34,Default,,0,0,0,,It's working.
Dialogue: 0,0:02:46.34,0:02:48.95,Default,,0,0,0,,The beauty of Family Guided Routines Based Intervention
Dialogue: 0,0:02:48.95,0:02:50.95,Default,,0,0,0,,is that through this practice
Dialogue: 0,0:02:50.95,0:02:53.99,Default,,0,0,0,,they've been able to open their eyes to learning opportunities
Dialogue: 0,0:02:53.99,0:02:55.15,Default,,0,0,0,,throughout their whole day.
Dialogue: 0,0:02:55.15,0:02:58.06,Default,,0,0,0,,And they've been able to find ways to encourage
Dialogue: 0,0:02:58.06,0:03:00.89,Default,,0,0,0,,Evelyn's engagement and her communication
Dialogue: 0,0:03:00.89,0:03:02.43,Default,,0,0,0,,in ways that they had never
Dialogue: 0,0:03:02.43,0:03:04.80,Default,,0,0,0,,dreamt could be learning opportunities.
Dialogue: 0,0:03:04.80,0:03:06.83,Default,,0,0,0,,Just getting breakfast in the morning or
Dialogue: 0,0:03:06.83,0:03:08.53,Default,,0,0,0,,getting your clothes on to get dressed.
Dialogue: 0,0:03:08.53,0:03:10.90,Default,,0,0,0,,These are things that they do every day
Dialogue: 0,0:03:10.90,0:03:12.90,Default,,0,0,0,,and they hadn't though about them as opportunities
Dialogue: 0,0:03:12.90,0:03:14.94,Default,,0,0,0,,for Evelyn to be learning before
Dialogue: 0,0:03:14.94,0:03:16.94,Default,,0,0,0,,and now I think they're finding ways to embed
Dialogue: 0,0:03:16.94,0:03:18.31,Default,,0,0,0,,what we do during our visits
Dialogue: 0,0:03:18.31,0:03:19.78,Default,,0,0,0,,throughout their whole day.
Dialogue: 0,0:03:20.15,0:03:21.35,Default,,0,0,0,,Being coached as a parent
Dialogue: 0,0:03:21.35,0:03:25.05,Default,,0,0,0,,teaching me things that I didn't think about before
Dialogue: 0,0:03:25.75,0:03:27.19,Default,,0,0,0,,like talking to her more
Dialogue: 0,0:03:27.19,0:03:28.52,Default,,0,0,0,,we describe what we're doing
Dialogue: 0,0:03:28.52,0:03:30.79,Default,,0,0,0,,or, like, say what we're playing with.
Dialogue: 0,0:03:33.66,0:03:36.26,Default,,0,0,0,,I think this was a really exciting visit because
Dialogue: 0,0:03:36.26,0:03:39.70,Default,,0,0,0,,Jessica and Jesus - they were coming up with really great ideas
Dialogue: 0,0:03:39.70,0:03:42.03,Default,,0,0,0,,they were asking really great questions
Dialogue: 0,0:03:42.03,0:03:44.30,Default,,0,0,0,,they were able to do some problem solving
Dialogue: 0,0:03:44.30,0:03:46.30,Default,,0,0,0,,If something didn't work how they thought it would
Dialogue: 0,0:03:46.30,0:03:48.21,Default,,0,0,0,,they were coming up with new ideas.
Dialogue: 0,0:03:48.21,0:03:50.61,Default,,0,0,0,,They were able to tell me other times throughout
Dialogue: 0,0:03:50.61,0:03:52.68,Default,,0,0,0,,their day where they want to focus.
Dialogue: 0,0:03:52.68,0:03:54.95,Default,,0,0,0,,So this was a visit when I really
Dialogue: 0,0:03:54.95,0:03:57.92,Default,,0,0,0,,saw them take the lead on a lot of things
Dialogue: 0,0:03:57.92,0:03:59.38,Default,,0,0,0,,and that's always exciting.
Description of the video:
we all know how important that first
conversation we have with our families
is in setting the stage for successful
coaching interactions hi i'm nancy
brockway and i'm here to share some of
my tips on how to get this conversation
started i first start out letting
parents know that we are equal partners
in this process
i depend on their knowledge of their
child their routines and their
activities to help them develop a plan
that will work for their family because
of this i'm going to be asking lots of
questions so i can gather that
information that will support us in
making a plan
i let them know that my job is to help
them feel competent to support their
child's development when i'm not there
to accomplish this i'm going to model
strategies for them
i let them know that their participation
in practicing the strategies while i'm
there with them will help them feel
comfortable with the strategies and will
also help me feel comfortable knowing
they understand the strategies
i always let them know that our sessions
if something doesn't work we will
problem solve through it together
that find something that does work or it
feels comfortable for their family
finally i tell parents that during our
visit we will develop a plan for what
they will do in between our visits when
i'm not there
a plan for what we will do when we get
back together for the next visit
i warn them that lots of families feel
uncomfortable with that next visit
but i reassure them that i will guide
them through it and with practice they
will become more comfortable letting me
know what their priorities are and what
they want to focus on thank you so much
i hope this was helpful for you
Description of the video:
my name is missy rose and i am a
pediatric physical therapist
i work in the early intervention setting
and i was asked to describe
what pt is like for a parent
as a pt i'm going to come into your home
and we're going to talk about concerns
you have with how your child is moving
and we're going to problem solve
together how to make it easier for your
child to move so that they can keep up
with their siblings or with you
and after i've shown you ways to do it
then you as a parent are going to give
it a try and i'm just going to be there
to guide you so that it's as easy as
but the thing to remember is that i'm
only there usually once a week
so this is
activities that i'd love to build into
your daily routine so that you know how
to help your child throughout the week
so i'm there more as a guide or a coach
you know how to help your child become
